Marketing Manager, Willits, CA.

Job Purpose

The Marketing Manager leads, develops, and executes a marketing strategy with the goal to increase Sparetime Supply’s exposure and market share within the Wholesale Garden Supply Industry; communicating with key personnel to achieve overall success for the company.  The Marketing Manager directs and coordinates all marketing department operations and manages current staff; planning and delegating all department members, systems and procedures for optimal operating efficiency.


Manager’s Primary Duties and Responsibilities

Supervise Department Operations

  • Ongoing review of department productivity, ensuring department runs as smooth as possible on a consistent basis.
  • Responsible for maintaining proper time management of all departmental tasks
  • Implementing controls that promote efficiency and effectiveness
  • Apply strategic planning to determine departmental objectives

Employee Management and Human Resources

  • Participate in new employee interviews and train employees
  • Ensure all subordinate employee time card accuracy,
  • Processing of time off requests (vacation, sick, unpaid)
  • Scheduling department for optimal productivity
  • Document individual performance and disciplinary actions
  • Recommend appropriate actions for staff (lateral, advancement, demotion, or termination)
  • Supervise direct reporting staff according to overall company policy
  • Maintain regular department meetings with written agenda, list of employees, and signup sheet, kept on file
  • Coach, mentor and motivate staff and set employee goals and objectives
  • Ensure confidentiality of employee and sensitive information

Interdepartmental Communication

  • Ensure departments function together effectively
  • Maintain open lines of communications with interdepartmental managers
  • Generate procedure improvements when needed
  • Administrative meetings; follow-through and follow-up
  • Flexible and accommodating to growth and change

Specific Responsibility and Authority to Department

  • Digital Marketing
  • Social Media (Facebook, Instagram, etc.)
    • Maintain a schedule for posting regularly (2-3 times per day) using Hootsuite
    • Design graphics when needed
    • Find content to share when needed
    • Engage with other companies within the industry
    • Work with Sales Team on content
  • Website
    • Work with Head of IT on improvements to general user experience
    • Edit descriptions for new products
    • Help with sequencing, product names and keywords
    • Write/develop content for website:
      • Blogs
      • Resources
      • Summer Expo
      • About Us
    • Develop advertisement programs and work with partners to secure ad spaces
  • Email Campaigns
    • Review schedules for email campaigns
    • Work with Sales Team on content/promotions
  • Sparetime Supply Summer Expo
  • Event Coordinator
  • Prepare meeting agendas and run Expo Management Meetings
  • Maintain Budget
  • Develop and manage all print and promotional marketing for Summer Expo
  • Work with Exhibitors on Sponsorships
  • Design Program, including:
  • Create content for Sparetime pages
  • Create Map
  • Place all adds
  • Marketing Material
  • Print Marketing
  • Develop and manage the production of:
  • Monthly Newsletter
    • Monthly Price Changes
    • Brochures
    • Flyers
    • Business Cards
  • Promotional Marketing
  • Manage projects for all Promotional Marketing including for:
    • Co-branded projects
    • Tradeshow Schwag
    • General Sparetime branded material
      • Shirts
      • Pens
      • Notepads
    • Brand Quality Control
    • Ensure Sparetime Supply’s brand is represented on all material in a way that is in line with the published branding guidelines by:
      • Managing the logo
        • Keep files organized
        • Distribute logo as needed
      • Reviewing all forms/printed material created by office
    • Marketing Relationship with Partners
    • Maintain relationship with partners to make sure we are representing their brand within their vision.
    • Research
    • New and innovative way to market on social media and other marketing medias
    • Industry and trends
    • Tradeshow Marketing
    • Research upcoming tradeshows and work with Sales Manager on which ones to attend as either a guest or exhibitor; book booths at tradeshows
    • Help develop tradeshow booths when exhibiting
      • Other duties as assigned


Departmental Supervisory Duties and Responsibilities

  • Oversee and Review Social Media schedules, postings calendar, share content, and photography
  • Oversee and Review Website stocking messages, product descriptions and content development
  • Oversee monthly analytics reports and price change report
  • Oversee Expo communication with exhibitors for marketing needs, update of exhibitor marketing records and budget, promotional item ordering, customer registration contact
  • Oversee promotional marketing research




Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration, preferably with an emphasis in marketing with (2) years’ experience as a marketing professional OR 3 years in a marketing administrator role.



  • Ability to solve practical problems using critical thinking
  • Organized and works well under pressure, attention to detail
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills, positive interpersonal skills, ability to read and interpret industry related documents, forms, and procedure manuals
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence
  • Ability to manage multiple projects at a time
  • Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, markups, proportions, and percentages
  • Familiarity with Internet and proficient in Microsoft Office
  • Dependable, punctual, professional, creative


Specialized Knowledge:

  • Knowledge of business and management principles and practices
  • Knowledge of strategic planning, and human resource management principles and procedures
  • Knowledge of basic office administrative procedures, and proficient in relevant software applications
  • Knowledge of Adobe Suite (Creative Cloud)



  • Nursery and horticulture supply knowledge a plus
  • Bilingual a plus


Working Conditions

Works primarily (90% of the time) indoors in a climate-controlled, smoke-free environment, with moderate to loud noise levels.  The employee may also work (10% of the time) outdoors or in buildings that are not climate-controlled where (s)/he may be exposed, and may be exposed to fumes, airborne particles, or agricultural elements due to the nature of the business.


Mandatory overtime in busy season, and some Saturdays.


Physical Requirements

Majority of the day is spent sitting and occasionally standing, working on a computer when not working trade shows.   Must be able to stay on feet for 10+ hours to work trade shows.  May have occasional lifting of less than 10-25 lbs.
