“This is truly one of the greatest if not the greatest tragedy that California has ever faced. The devastation is just unbelievable, it’s a horror that no one could have imagined.”
– California Gov. Jerry Brown
On the night of October 8th, the worst firestorm in California history raged through communities in Sonoma, Napa, Lake and Mendocino Counties. The toll of these fires has been catastrophic for numerous families and businesses throughout these four counties. More than 160,000 acres burned, upwards of 8,400 structures were destroyed and losses are estimated at a total of more than $1 billion. The most devastating toll however, is the lives that were lost.
The smoke has cleared and the first October rains doused the last smoldering spots, but the challenging journey forward is just beginning.
Our local community in Mendocino County showed its true colors in the immediate and heartfelt response to the devastation. Neighbors opened their doors to those less fortunate, emergency shelters were set up, donation centers for necessities sprouted up immediately at local churches and boutiques and large benefits were planned in a matter of days.
To give back to those that lost so much, Sparetime Supply and the Griggs family committed to match donations up to $10,000 to the Community Foundation of Mendocino County Disaster Relief Fund. In the wake of destruction and during the first steps of recovery, we reached out to one of our distribution partners, FoxFarm, who wanted to do what they could to help those in need. FoxFarm and Sparetime Supply partnered together to give an additional $20,000 to the relief fund.
Here at Sparetime, we believe in the power of relationships. In their generous display of compassion, FoxFarm showed us exactly how powerful relationships can be. While FoxFarm is based just north of Mendocino County in Humboldt County, Northern California as a whole has its own sense of community and connection. We are proud to be partnered with companies like FoxFarm; those that reach out and give back when nearby communities are hurting. There is nothing more healing than compassionate actions such as the helping hand that FoxFarm extended to Mendocino County in these difficult times.
